What Happens During a GenServ Generator Service Visit
Homeowners in Benders Landing, Carlton Woods, Creekside Park and the rest of our area often ask what they are paying for when they book a generator service. Here is what a GenServ standby generator maintenance visit looks like, in the order the work is done. This follows the checklist our technicians work from.
1. Arrival and manual test
The technician photographs the unit and its surroundings, then runs the generator in manual mode for about five minutes, listening for valve problems and checking for proper startup. Valves are adjusted if needed.
2. Gas line inspection
- Gas intake pressure reading.
- Check the line is free from corrosion.
- Confirm consistent flow from the main line to the generator.
3. Air filter
The air filter is inspected for dirt and oil damage and replaced as needed, and excess oil is wiped from the filter box.
4. Oil and oil filter
Oil is drained completely using air pressure, the oil filter is replaced with a compatible one, and the engine is refilled with 5W-30 full synthetic. The unit then runs again, the dipstick is checked for the final oil level, and startup is checked once more. The interior and cabinet are wiped down and blown clear of debris.
5. Battery
- Check battery status and voltage.
- Look for corrosion on the terminals and apply corrosion-prevention spray.
- Replace terminals or the battery if needed, and label a new battery with its install date.
- Clean the battery compartment and blow the ventilation grate clean.
6. Control panel
The technician checks the date and time, confirms the exercise day and time with the homeowner (set to weekly), clears maintenance codes, and resets the maintenance logs and reminders in the dealer menu.
7. Back to AUTO and a load test
The most important line on the sheet: confirm the generator is returned to AUTO mode. A generator left out of AUTO will not start when the power fails. The visit ends with a test under load to confirm proper transfer in AUTO mode.
Schedule A and Schedule B
Schedule A is the oil change, filter swap and tune-up. Schedule B adds air-cleaner service, spark-plug replacement and a valve adjustment. You also receive a service report.
